The Fisherman’s Hat
An Irrational Element’s Fishermen’s Hat is introduced in Collection 006 for the first time. Made from a ramie fabric in a dandelion-esque yellow. When traveling and wandering about I would often wear many types of hats; skateboarding hats, tech hats, snufkin styled hats, mountaineering hats and even a kova tembel hat. Though the hat I would wear the most was an olive colored bucket hat from a fishing brand that had the text ‘So many lures, so little time’ embroidered on it, the easiness of wearing the hat motivated me to add a bucket hat to the collection.
So the name Fisherman’s Hat derives from that hat but the style is slightly different since I designed the An Irrational Element iteration slightly oversized. This offers the wearer to play around with the ways of wearing the hat because of the brim that now has more space to be flapped and styled to one’s liking.
At first I was hesitant to make headwear as I did not believe in its longevity and it mostly being a side item for most collections. Later I realized the potential, comfort and happiness that such a relatively small item could offer. The comfort of owning an item that you can easily carry, put away, share, make dirty and then clean again. It’s an item to bring happiness just by wearing it at the beach and swim with or really style it with a cool outfit, anything goes.
Collection 006 turned out to have some very strong nautical themes going on with the Fisherman’s Hat, waxed cotton jackets and coats and 7/8th Simple Trouser. This was never the intention as An Irrational Element collections are never fixed by a theme, that being said I was really happy to see this outcome as it does very much resonate with me personally. We shot the lookbook at my local village harbor and I styled the Fisherman’s Hat with the brim turned mostly upwards as it matched the setting. In a similar setting the hat was matched with the Camera Coat and the whole image changed to, what many friends referred to as, a Paddington-esque look. Later we shot in the village garden and the hat was styled differently again. I’m telling you this because I want to show you the ambiguity I aim An Irrational Element items to have. The items are not meant for a fixed type of person, they are meant for you to interpret and make your own as only you can do.
