A Closer Look | Karl Coat
The first coat ever designed by An Irrational Element introduced in Collection 003 in a colorful and natural Harris Tweed fabric. Named after philosopher Karl Popper the coat contains elements of freedom such as a raglan sleeve, adjustable buckles and oversized fit that give the wearer a greater sense of wearability. This openness in wearing and adoptable character in terms of fit are an ode and reference towards the openness Karl Popper advocated for.
Over the past seasons there have been several releases of the Karl Coat such as a plaid Italian ECO wool mix which is very autumnal colored, a limited edition for retailer MAIDENS in Japan made from moleskin and the latest edition for collection 007 which is a poly mix with an incredibly soft feel and fine structure.
Each edition has its own distinctive characteristics since the choice of fabric heavily influences its drape, look and fit. This is one of the main reasons why An Irrational Element revisits past styles as to experiment with the constant (the pattern) and to replace the variable (fabric) every other season to create newness. Throughout the manufacturing process there is an evident difference when producing plaid or plain editions of the Karl Coat for example. As details are important to An Irrational Element this becomes clear when one takes a closer look at our plaid editions and its finishing of pockets and joined seams. You will see that all front pocket patterns are cut by hand as the plaid pocket patterns match with the body’s overal plaid and create a continuously pattern over the whole coat. It are these details that give the coat that little piece of extra finesse.
With the methodology of using constants and variables to test the effects of interchangeability whilst keeping our quality as high as possible An Irrational Element pays homage in its own manner to Karl Popper and his line of thought.
