Retrōspicere | Copenhagen and its surroundings

In Retrōspicere (meaning; 'to look back’) past imagery is taken from the An Irrational Element archive and curated into a visual novella as to reflect and conjure feelings, memories and thoughts.

This August An Irrational Element took a one week trip to Copenhagen, one of the European design capitals. Documenting each day with the Nikon F5 and a couple of different indie black & white 135mm film rolls. Copenhagen seemed to us as the best of a multitude of worlds, the streets felt like a blend of Paris, London and Amsterdam, the musea were captivating, the food delicious and the people genuine. As noted in the first issue of ‘Retrōspicere’ this is a simple visual memoir though a little different this time as it has been shot in black & white. The feeling of these images are different, a lot of distractions have been cancelled out and there is more focus on shapes, shadows and textures.

For this second issue of ‘Retrōspicere’ we have divided the visual memoir in two parts as they have been shot with two different types of film which we both want to highlight.

Used for part. 1 of Copenhagen and its Surroundings is film ‘D’ by Film Washi, a humble sized French company which uses unconventional film types that are converted to standard film formats. Film D its original use has been for Russian aerial surveillance and is turned into a panchromatic black & white film offering results with high contrast and medium grain. Captured in part. 1 are the Louisiana Museum, the Botanical Garden, the streets of Copenhagen and snippets of An Irrational Element’s Collection 008.

Here part. 1 ends and part. 2 begins. You will find imagery with a lower contrast and higher grain. These images are shot with a roll of film called BCG P-400 gifted to me by its developer Chuck Baker who owns BCG Film & Photography which is an independent shop in the Netherlands selling a great range of film and photography goods. I stumbled upon his store whilst looking for film and called him up inquiring about his stock and what not, we had a great talk and he ended up sending me some of his own created film. The spacial diversity in Copenhagen was a great place to test out this roll of film and captured in part. 2 are the Copenhagen city harbor, the Glyptotek and the streets of Copenhagen.
